Global News Overview

Week ended 17 May 2013

Key Economic News

US: Major North American equity market indices gained ground for the week despite the release of some relatively disappointing economic data.

Europe: European equities rose last week, nearing a five-year high, as the Bank of England raised its growth forecast and US consumer confidence improved.

Asia Pacific: Asian stockmarkets ended mixed last week as softer Chinese and US data counterbalanced hopes that the world’s major central banks will continue to pursue expansionary policies.

Emerging Markets: Emerging stockmarkets fell marginally on the back of softer Chinese and US data, while lower commodity prices also weighed on resource-heavy indices. Losses were pared by hopes that the world’s major central banks will continue to pursue expansionary policies.
